New questions.
Better methods.
Shared discovery.

Research is Zinkea's R&D activity: a space to formulate the questions that guide our work, develop methods and connect international expertise with the challenges facing business and society.

We often work in partnership with institutions and policymakers, bringing scientific inquiry into dialogue with the people closest to a problem. Our connections to the worldwide social modelling and simulation community help us seek out relevant ideas, challenge our thinking and bring complementary expertise into the work.

Questions before answers

Defining what is worth investigating.

Useful research begins by examining the question itself. We work to identify the mechanisms that need explanation, the evidence that is missing and the assumptions that existing approaches leave untested. Dialogue with partners helps us connect scientific relevance with practical needs while keeping the investigation open to unexpected findings.

Complexity, emergence, adaptation and persistence across social, economic and organisational systems provide a common thread. Questions guiding this perspective include:

  • How do individual behaviours and relationships generate collective outcomes?
  • Why do some systems adapt to disruption while others remain locked into persistent patterns?
  • How can research methods better capture uncertainty, feedback and unintended consequences?

Our R&D practice

Developing ideas through collaboration and scrutiny.

Methods

Develop, compare, refine

We investigate the strengths and limits of research methods, including soft and hard computing techniques. We explore how complementary approaches can be combined, test their assumptions and examine whether a new method adds explanatory value.

Method development can involve conceptual work, computational experiments, comparison with existing approaches and assessment against relevant evidence. A promising prototype is a starting point for further investigation.

Partnerships

Shape the inquiry together

Working with institutions and policymakers helps us formulate questions grounded in context. Partners contribute knowledge of the system, its constraints and the decisions that research could inform.

We seek shared clarity about the purpose, responsibilities and intended outputs of a collaboration, including how evidence, confidentiality and opportunities for dissemination will be handled. Scientific judgement remains essential throughout.

Community

Bring perspectives into conversation

Our international researchers and professors are closely connected to the social modelling and simulation community. We draw on that exchange to identify relevant scholarship, question established assumptions and connect expertise across disciplines.

We value collaboration that improves an idea through criticism, comparison and new perspectives. The aim is to contribute to a wider research conversation as well as learn from it.

From inquiry to application

A foundation that keeps evolving.

Research informs the approaches developed in Modelling and the questions explored through Advisory. Experience from those activities can reveal gaps, challenge assumptions and generate new directions for R&D.

We distinguish exploratory concepts, working methods and findings supported by testing or review. The level of evidence required depends on the claim being made and the intended use. Uncertainty and unsuccessful approaches can be informative parts of the research process.

Research outputs

Sharing work with context.

Scientific publications and research outputs will be added to our Resources collection following review and approval. Where appropriate and permitted, these may include methodological notes, documented prototypes, code or other materials that support examination and reuse.

Each output should make its authorship, development or review status, assumptions, limitations and applicable licence clear. Sharing must respect partner agreements, intellectual property and data protection obligations.

An invitation to collaborate

What question could we explore together?

We welcome conversations with researchers, institutions and policymakers interested in developing methods, shaping a research question or bringing complementary expertise to a shared challenge.
