A research lab for decisions that matter.

Meet our approach

Zinkea is a boutique research lab and advisory firm bringing together experienced international researchers and professors. We work directly with policymakers and business leaders to understand complex problems and explore practical responses to the challenges facing organisations and society.

The people

International expertise. Close collaboration.

Our people combine deep academic expertise with experience working on questions that extend beyond the university. Closely connected to the international social modelling and simulation community, we bring together perspectives from different disciplines and research traditions around a shared problem.

Our boutique approach keeps experienced researchers close to the work and to the people making decisions. It allows us to build a focused collaboration around each question, combining scientific inquiry with a clear understanding of its practical context.

The perspective

Understanding how change happens

Many urgent business and policy challenges arise from the interaction of people, institutions, technologies and their environment. Individual decisions can produce collective outcomes that no participant intended. Feedback, adaptation and competing interests can make an apparently straightforward intervention behave in unexpected ways.

We study these relationships to understand how patterns emerge, why problems persist and where change may be possible. The aim is to help decision-makers see the wider system, examine alternatives and recognise consequences that might otherwise be overlooked.

One connected practice

Research, modelling and advisory

Our three areas of work form a connected process. Research develops the questions, explanations and evidence. Modelling makes assumptions explicit and provides a way to investigate interactions and explore scenarios. Advisory brings those insights into discussion with the people responsible for strategy, policy and implementation.

Social modelling and simulation help us ask how different behaviours, institutional arrangements or interventions might shape outcomes. We use them to support inquiry and comparison, with attention to what the evidence can establish and where uncertainty remains.

Where understanding meets responsibility

Working with the people responsible for change

We work directly with policymakers on pressing societal challenges and with organisations facing difficult strategic choices. Close dialogue helps connect the research question to the decision at hand: what can be changed, whose interests are affected, what constraints matter and which trade-offs need to be understood.

Questions of organisational transformation, resilience and adaptation are central to this perspective. Our current interests also include tourism destination dynamics, where business decisions, community wellbeing and the long-term development of a place are closely connected.

Our contribution is to clarify choices, test the reasoning behind them and provide evidence that can inform action. We seek to make difficult decisions better informed while recognising the responsibilities and judgement of those who must take them.

What guides us

Scientific rigour and intellectual honesty

Visible assumptions.
Open questions.
Careful conclusions.

We make assumptions visible, examine the quality of the available evidence and communicate limitations alongside findings. We distinguish exploratory ideas from results supported by validation, and scenarios from predictions.

We value methods that can be explained, challenged and improved. A useful model should deepen understanding and expose important uncertainties as well as generate results. Our commitment is to careful inquiry and clear advice, with conclusions proportionate to the evidence.

Let's think it through

Start with a question

We welcome conversations with public institutions, businesses and research collaborators confronting problems that cross disciplinary or organisational boundaries. Tell us about the decision you face, the system you want to understand or the question that existing approaches leave unanswered.
